Calendar	Author of "Railroaded" Featured in New History Series The next installment in the Contemporary Historians at the Presidio series is The Transcontinental Railroads and Wars Better Left Unfought, featuring Richard White of Stanford University. White is the author of the new bookRailroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America. He will share his perspective on the story behind how the system came to be. Please join us!   Ranger Rick's Geocache Experience at the Presidio The Presidio is participating in the National Wildlife Federation’s Ranger Rick’s Geocache Trails, a new family-friendly, outdoor treasure hunt happening in parks nationwide. Geocaching is a popular form of outdoor recreation whereby hidden “caches” (typically small boxes) are discovered using GPS technology. The museum is located at 104 Montgomery Street, on the Main Post, in the Presidio.   Arion Press Showcases Work of Charlotte Salomon Join Arion Press for an illustrated talk on the autobiography in pictures of holocaust-era artist Charlotte Salomon, “the Anne Frank of the visual arts,” given by Stanford historian Mary Felstiner. It will reopen in September as the Presidio Performing Arts Center, an upgraded facility featuring a multi-use theatre for performances and special events, children's rehearsal studio, gift shop, and library. The new center will teach dance from around the world. For more information,visit their website, or contact Judy Bretschneider at (415) 561-3997.   Public Meeting on Taylor Road Parking The Presidio Trust is now completing a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) examining the Main Post west of the Main Parade Ground. A CLR documents the history and significance of an historic landscape, and is typically prepared to ensure a site’s character is understood and documented before changes happen in the area. The first project to be implemented after publication of the CLR is a 140-stall parking lot behind the Montgomery Street Barracks on Taylor Road. This project will formalize and improve an existing unpaved parking area, and establish limited new parking in some areas. The Trust is hosting apublic meeting on Monday, June 13, from 4 to 5 pm at the Golden Gate Club, 135 Fisher Loop to discuss the CLR and Taylor Road parking. A tour is held at Noon on the first Wednesday of each month. Presidio Visitor Experience Workshop: New Visitor Center and Heritage Center

Please join us for the last in a series of facilitated workshops about how the Presidio visitor experience can be made more vibrant.

 

May 31 Topic: The Presidio Trust, National Park Service, and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy have been working with an exhibit design firm on the conceptual framework for visitor experiences at the Presidio, with a particular focus on the content, programs, and activities that will be offered at the Visitor Center and the Heritage Center.

 

In recent weeks the firm has conducted an extensive exploration of the park. At this event, they will make a preliminary presentation about their findings so that the community may comment on them as a “work in progress.” A presentation will be followed by breakout groups for discussion. Join us to share your thoughts and suggestions. Light refreshments will be provided.

Public Meeting June 13--Presidio Trust

The Presidio Trust (Trust) plans to hold a public meeting to discuss the latest design for the Taylor Road Parking Lot on June 13.   This meeting will satisfy the public meeting requirement and initiate the comment period on the 90% schematic design for this project under Appendix K of the Programmatic Agreement for the Main Post Update (PA-MPU).  At the meeting we will also discuss the findings of the West of Main Parade Cultural Landscape Report (WoMP CLR), which has informed the design of this project. 

 

The Taylor Road Parking Lot is an approximately 140-stall lot that will be constructed to the west of Taylor Road, which runs parallel to Montgomery Street at the rear of the Montgomery Street Barracks buildings.  The project will formalize and improve an existing unpaved parking area, and establish limited new parking in some areas.  In all, the new parking facility is designed to support the removal of parking from central historic open spaces (such as the Main Parade) and the leasing of historic buildings currently being rehabilitated (100, 101 and 103), and retains the two historic garages within the project area (113 and 118).  The focus of the discussion will be on the compatibility of the design in the landscape and its impact on the relatively few historic resources in the area.  The Main Post Planning & Design Guidelines and WoMP CLR were developed in order to inform the design of this new facility, and to assist you in your review and formulation of comments on the design.  The relationship between this parking lot and the overall traffic and parking management in the Main Post was analyzed in the Supplemental EIS for the Main Post Update, and will not be the subject of this discussion.

The next event isFrom Gandhi to King with Robert McDermott, Ph.D, professor of philosophy and religion at the California Institute of Integral Studies. In 1906, Gandhi developed satyagraha (non-violent soul-force) against racism and social injustice; and beginning in 1956, Martin Luther King, Jr. applied Gandhian principles in service of the American civil rights movement. Both Gandhi and King extended their religious roots, Hinduism and Christianity respectively, in the service of social justice world wide. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 12, from 7 to 9 pm at the Presidio Chapel, 130 Fisher Loop, on the Main Post. Free admission: suggested donation $10.   Offer Comment on the Cleanup Plan for Landfill E The California Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), and the Presidio Trust announce the availability of a Draft Feasibility Study Remedial Action Plan (FS/RAP), which recommends cleanup for Landfill E in the Presidio. The Draft FS/RAP proposes capping, containment, and monitoring as the preferred cleanup alternative for Landfill E. A California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Draft Negative Declaration for the cleanup project has also been prepared. A public meeting will be held on Thursday, April 7, at 7 pm, at the Golden Gate Club. Betty Goerke is a retired professor of anthropology and archaeology at the College of Marin, and author of "Chief Marin: Leader, Rebel and Legend". Her findings are based on official documents of the Presidio of San Francisco and the Mission Dolores, letters, diaries, and artifacts held in U.S. and European museums. The colorful 1816 drawings done in and around the Presidio and Mission Dolores by Louis Choris will illustrate her talk.
