At the January 14, 2015 PAR General Membership Meeting, Patrick Otellini (Director of the Earthquake Safety Implementation Program in the Office of the City Administrator) announced today's implementation of the State's Earthquake Brace+Bolt Program for four designated zip codes within the City and County of San Francisco. Fortuitously, those zip codes include "94121" in the Richmond District.
Implementation of that program begins with a very narrow, 30-day, registration period which ends February 15, 2015. Your immediate and urgent consideration of participating in this program is strongly suggested if you ever wanted to seismically retrofit your home.
Under this program (which is under a joint power authority between the California Earthquake Authority and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services) qualifying owners of homes in that designated zip code will be offered "up to $3,000 to cover costs associated with retrofitting their house to lessen earthquake damage". That retrofitting may include, but would not necessarily be limited to, anchoring the home to its foundation and installing shear walls between the house frame and its foundation in the crawl space underneath the house or, as is more commonly found in San Francisco, in the much more vulnerable and taller garage space underneath the house.
Please visit earthquakebracebolt.com for additional details of the program, the pre-qualification survey and the registration form and process. Please let PAR know if you have any questions or comments.
