e-News from the SF Recreation and Park Department   Women's World Cup LIVE at Civic Center Plaza!   Fresh off last summer's wildly popular World Cup soccer broadcasts at Civic Center Plaza, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department will again host free, family-friendly viewing parties featuring the best of this month's FIFA Women's World Cup matches.   Rec and Park will host live broadcasts of the quarterfinal matches on Saturday, July 9 (at 9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. PST); the semifinals on Wednesday, July 13 (9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. PST); and the final match on Saturday, July 17 (11:45 am. PST).    Each event day, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the energy of a live crowd and watch the world's best women soccer players compete on a large, 13'x17' screen.  Activities for kids, including mini-soccer games, giant inflatables and soccer skills challenges will be provided by Rec and Park and park partner America SCORES Bay Area.  Gourmet food trucks from Off-the-Grid will also be on hand to feed the masses.   Log onto worldcupsf.com for more information.    See the City from On High  Kick off the Fourth of July weekend by zipping 680 feet across Justin Herman Plaza, 80 feet above the ground.  Catch beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge and the city below.The zipline is a partnership between the Recreation and Park Department and Ziptrek Ecotours and follows the successful trial of the zipline last April. Ziptrek Ecotours runs ziplines in Whistler, Canada and Queenstown, New Zealand, and their Vancouverzipline was a feature attraction of the 2010 Winter Olympics.The zipline will run through the summer and costs $29.    Take a Hike on Newly Restored Corona Heights Trails    A series of newly restored trails at Corona Heights Park has just reopened, just in time for hikers to enjoy the Fourth of July weekend.  The newly designed and restored trails allow visitors to have safer access to the top of Corona Heights where they can enjoy panoramic views of the city and beyond. The improvement project is one of several under the Trail Restoration Program funded by the Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, which San Francisco voters overwhelmingly approved in 2008. Dear Park User, Throughout 2010 - 2011, Neighborhood Parks Council has been hosting a series ofPark Town Halls to hear your views about managing our parks, get your creative solutions to challenges, and identify concerns before park decisions are made by officials. We are organizing our next Park Town Hall meeting and hope you will join us. SF RECREATION AND PARK ENEWS   Bam Bam a Hit at Kimbell Field    Hensley "Bam Bam" Meulens, former pro baseball player and current SF Giants batting coach, joined a throng of eager baseball fans at Kimbell Field on June 21 to offer baseball tips and talk about his experiences with the sport. e-News from the SF Recreation and Park Department   Celebrate National Trails Day with Rec and Park This Saturday!     On Saturday, June 4, the Sutro Stewards will host a trail and habitat stewardship event in celebration of the American Hiking Society's 19th annual National Trails Day.® The event will be held on Mount Sutro in two adjoining open space areas-- the UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve and the SF Recreation and Parks Interior Greenbelt. Volunteers will perform stewardship activities from 9AM-12:30 PM, followed by a celebration to mark the reopening of the Interior Greenbelt and a newly restored half-mile segment of trail that originates at Stanyan Street in Cole Valley and connects to the UCSF trail network. Though days old, the baby swan is not afraid to get her feathers ruffled, Hagerty said. Martha is already very active and spends her days swimming in the lagoon...But like most new parents, Blue Boy and Blanche keep a watchful eye over their cygnet." Volunteers needed for the following events.  Bring a friend!    Let us know so we can plan coverage ---

 

Oak Woodland Trails improvement meeting:  Wednesday, May 25^th -  Leafleting:  5:30 to 6:30.  Meeting starts:  6:00 (ends at 7:30 p.m.)  GGP Senior Center (Fulton near 37^th Avenue).  Come a little early and hand out leaflets at the door.  Oak Woodlands folks are interested in habitat and should be informed about the damage to the habitat that the soccer fields will cause.  Feel free to stay for the meeting.   (Other dates:  June 15;  July 13)

Sunday Streets:  Sunday, June 12^th, 11:00 – 4:00 p.m. ·          Bayview, 3^rd Street from Bayview Opera House to Dogpatch, Lower Potrero Hill.  Join our volunteers if only for an hour or two, and then go off and enjoy the day.  This is a fun way to talk to people and enlist their support and a great way to get to know other parts of the City.  

(Next date:  July 10^th: Great Highway and Golden Gate Park)

 

Ocean Beach Vision Plan public workshop:  Saturday, June 4^th.  Anytime between 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (Final time and location TBD   - somewhere in western Sunset or Richmond.)  Hand out leaflets as folks arrive to view the most recent plans for Ocean Beach - from the Cliff House to the Zoo.  While you are there, give input on any plans near Golden Gate Park and ask to keep the Park a place for nature – not development!  Leafleting will be continuous – come at any time.

 

3.      Can’t come to a scheduled event?  Want some exercise and to get to know the neighborhood?  Come join us in distributing leaflets !

Many, many people in the Outer Sunset and Richmond Districts still do not know about the soccer fields project (or the water treatment factory!).   Join your fellow Ocean Edgers in walking the local area and leaving leaflets.  Let us know you are interested, and we’ll have a leafleting party. 

Other ideas are to leaflet at places like Other Avenues and ask people to sign-up for our group. 

 

4.      Commonwealth Club Panel

Thanks to the many people who attended this enlightening discussion.  Attendance was over 90 people!  Many had never heard of the soccer project and talked with us afterwards.  The panel will be broadcast by the Commonwealth Club in a few weeks – we’ll let you know the date and time.

5.      Get your button now and wear it with pride!

Our new buttons are a great success.  Members took a bunch to the San Francisco Tomorrow dinner, along with our flyers – the buttons were snapped up by attendees.

Get a button (only $1.00 donation) and wear it.  People will ask you:  “What is happening with Golden Gate Park?”  You can give them a short talk and then the flyers, which are FREE – yes FREE – with the button!  (Well, OK, they are free anyway….)
